Mutual Fund Investing For Retirement

When many of us think about the stock market, we think of the stereotypical stock and, the stereotypical concept of purchasing a stock. That is, to look at a company and try to evaluate, based on the economy and other factors, how their value per share will perform in the future. The premise is to buy low and sell high. The dilemma with stocks for retired investors is that stocks can also go down. A person’s retirement years may not be the time they want or afford to take a loss with respect to their financial resources because it is the most vulnerable of times for many to take a deduction of money like this. A good investment solution for senior citizens and the retired would be mutual funds.

What Exactly is A Mutual Fund?

A mutual fund is a portfolio of stocks as well as other financial instruments that are managed by a financial pro. The common and most down-to-earth concept of the attractiveness of a mutual fund is that when one stock goes down, it will be offset by a stock rising in price. This is intended to protect one from major loss.

Mutual funds pay dividends based on the growth or income to the fund. This attribute is used by the retired investor to create an income. If a mutual fund is routinely paying ten percent and a person puts $100,000 in the mutual fund, then they would receive $10,000 per year of income.

Why not just place the money in the bank? Even big deposits may not warrant as high an interest rate at any given time. Also, to obtain decent rates one usually has to lock the money up for a long time and they lose when the inflation rate goes up. The mutual fund acts as a hedge against inflation.

What makes the mutual fund alluring is that the mutual fund provides the opportunity to do more than just earn fixed interest. There are different kinds of mutual funds. Some mutual funds are for income, some are for growth and some are a combination. In all cases one mutual fund has a professional money manager taking care of the mutual funds as opposed to having to buy and sell on their own with the accompanying stress and management time.

A further reason to invest in mutual funds is that its conservative nature offers a hedge against loss and allows the investor to climb into other vehicles that may be more risky. That way a retired investor can try to make some money in mutual funds without jeopardizing their future.

Lastly, by being part of a mutual fund portfolio, the senior citizen has a chance to view how the different stocks that make up the mutual funds are performing and can select to invest in mutual funds that starts out performing the others to grow profits.

For the senior citizen and retired investor, mutual funds can offer a hedge against inflation and it can direct the retired investor to the best stock picks and, most importantly, it can protect the retired investor from losing their savings.

Long Short Mutual Funds as part of a balanced investment portfolio can help reduce risk and increase alpha.

(ArticlesBase SC #1728755)

Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/Long short mutual Fund Basics

The long short mutual fund is simply a mutual fund that uses hedge fund trading strategies. The difference of long short mutual funds versus the average mutual fund is that they use short positions in addition to leverage and derivatives to try to maximize returns no matter what the market conditions are. There are laws that control how many short positions and derivatives may be used in a long short mutual fund, so there are controls governing how successful these funds can be. The majority of investments in a long short mutual fund are in stocks so there are certainly risks out there. Why Invest in a Long short mutual Fund? Many investors are unaware of the long short mutual fund and don’t know why it would be beneficial. Basically, a long short mutual fund is the method created by the mutual fund industry to offer the average investor hedge fund advantages. The advantage the long short mutual fund has over a traditional hedge fund is that the fees are generally lower and there is no lock in period that applies. On the other hand, the fees associated with the long short mutual fund will be higher than the majority of mutual funds and liquidity is also lower. The long short mutual fund is different from mutual funds as well on the minimum investment front. In most cases investors will need to invest a minimum of $1,000 or more. Not every long short mutual fund has this much of an investment requirement, but many do. On the other hand, the short fund can’t include as many short positions, derivatives, and leverage as the hedge funds are allowed to. Nevertheless, investors will find the long short mutual fund diversifies their portfolio when the market is down. Of course, today’s investors are wary of putting all their eggs in one basket, so to speak, and diversification truly is necessary to reduce the chances of losing everything in a volatile market. Luckily, investors taking advantage of the benefits of the long short mutual fund will be able, in principle, to make money when the market is both up and down. Keep in mind the long short mutual fund is a recent innovation. However, many investors and fund managers are hopeful that this type of investment will play out the way everyone hopes it will. Time is the only way to find out whether the long short mutual fund is worthy of its newfound popularity.

In the securities world, the term “Hedge Fund” does not necessarily imply any use of “hedging” as commonly understood; for example where commodity traders use options to “hedge” a commodity position. Elucidating the distinction between hedge funds and mutual funds

Investment vehicles are of various types of which mutual funds are perhaps the most popular. However, people are increasingly becoming aware of the specialty investment vehicles, hedge funds. How do these differ from the conventional mutual funds? If you have no idea, it is better to get a good understanding of the distinction.

Ample promotion of mutual funds via advertisements helps to let people know about it. On the other hand, a hedge fund has restrictions on advertisements, and therefore, only the niche investors know of it. You can get the former from a prospectus while the latter is offered by private placement memo only.

Here are a few basic differences between the two types of investment schemes.

Nature – The mutual funds are investment vehicles registered to the SEC and need to adhere to all its rules and regulations. A hedge fund operating in New York is a private investment vehicle. Therefore, no strict regulations bind its management. Initial investments for mutual funds are smaller in amount than that of specialty funds.

Performance – While the performance of a general fund is assessed based on relative index, this is not so for the limited fund. Even when the relative index is down, hedge funds of New York are supposed to deliver absolute returns. The difference in strategies is what makes this kind of performance possible.

Strategies – Mutual fund utilizes relatively inflexible strategies; this gives a New York Hedge Fund an edge over it. The specialty investment vehicles can use strategies like leverage, short selling, derivatives, etc extensively. This is not the case with general funds, even if they can use some of the techniques there is a limit on it.

Investor – Any entity can invest in a mutual fund. This is not the case with a hedge fund. You have to be an accredited investor or qualified purchaser to be eligible for it. You have a net worth in millions, earn millions, own a business worth millions or hold assets in millions – only these make you eligible for becoming an investor.

Manager – The manager of a general investment fund does not invest his/her own capital while one of the specialty investment funds does. Moreover, in case of a mutual fund, the manager gets a salary and bonus, while a hedge fund manager gets a fixed fee and an incentive as per the profits from the fund.
