Alternative Investments in Finance
Alternative investment involves investment in assets other than the traditional products of stocks, bonds or cash. These assets include the likes of art, antiques, wine, coins or rare stamps – in other words, rare items. Financial assets like commodities, private equity, hedge funds and financial derivatives are also accommodated in alternative investment. Due to the complexities in their nature and the regulations and the illiquidity involved, alternative investment assets are usually held by institutional investors or accredited individuals.
A thorough investment analysis is required before buying and investing in alternative financial resources. They also involve a high minimum investment and fee structures compared to mutual funds. Traditional investment involves risk. We have seen how in recent times the world of finance was hit as bankruptcy triggered panic across the globe. But even in troubled waters, you don’t need to be bearish if you are the proud owner of a few bottles of Bordeaux or a Penny Black or may be a series of Andy Warhol prints as you are supposed to get their money back virtually.
Why do people go for alternative financial investment?
A probable reason why people invest in alternative resources is to diversify and reduce the overall investment risk. Portfolio diversification is suggested to potential investors to minimize the risk. And this can be achieved through alternative investment.
Advantages to investing alternatively:
1. Alternative investment involves low correlation with traditional financial investments like stocks and bonds. As a result several large institutional funds like the pension and private endowments have already begun allocating a small proportion, less than 10%, of their portfolios to alternative investments like hedge funds.
2. It is comparatively less liquid in nature.
Disadvantages to investing alternatively:
1. Lack of published verifiable performance data and minimum opportunity to advertise to potential investors.
2. Determining the current market value of assets is often difficult.
3. Cost of purchase and sales is relatively high.
The most common types of alternative investment include:
• Hedge funds as alternative financial investments include a wide range of investment assets like stocks and commodities, which principally aim at offsetting the potential losses in the markets.
• Future funds as alternative investments are standardized contracts of sale and purchase of commodity at a predetermined price on a specific date. Futures are used to trade currencies and commodities like petroleum and agricultural products.
• Real estate can also serve as an alternative investment option, which typically involves buying and selling of immovable properties like land and premises. It yields rental income as well as capital appreciation.
• Though not always viewed as such, art is certainly an alternative investment. This investment option gained some new traction after the 2008 market downturn and recession period.
• Investment in vintage items, such as fine wine, has proved profitable with consistent high-yield returns, even in the months of 2008 credit crunch.
• The precious metal gold is used as a defensive alternative financial investment, which tends to grow in popularity during periods of prolonged economic upheavals.
In this readily evolving economic climate, as investors are striving to locate the best investment niche, these alternative financial investment options are gaining greater and greater appreciation due to their low-risk and high-yield nature.

As with everything else these days, the stock market has gone online. If you can shop, pay bills, and do your banking online, why not invest too? Investing online is not as big of an ordeal as some people make it out to be. The key is to know what you want before you start.
When opening a new account, investors need to answer the regular questions, such as the type of account they want and how it will be funded. When selecting an account type the kind you choose will depend on whether or not the account is taxable or tax-deferred, and also whether it is for just you or you and someone else.
You will also have to decide whether your account will be “cash” or “margin.” A cash account means you are only able to place trades for investments with money in your account. A margin account gives you a credit line from your brokerage firm. You can also have a “margin account with options,” which means you are purchasing the right to buy and/or sell a stock at a specific price. Options are quite complicated and usually only purchased by traders with experience and large portfolios.
After choosing the type of account money must be deposited. The initial deposit can be sent to the firm by check or an automatic transfer from a bank account. Another option is transferring an account from a different brokerage firm, but the process is quite lengthy and can take months to complete.
If you are trying online investing for the first time, start small. Don’t put every penny of your life savings into an online account. A smaller sum is easier to handle and easier to keep track of. When you feel confident and are ready, then you can expand your online account.
Another good thing to do when investing online is to try and stay diversified, in other words don’t concentrate all of your portfolio on just one thing, instead develop a well-balanced portfolio of stocks, bonds, and cash.
Many brokers will encourage you not to bail out on mutual funds. The main reason most investors are in mutual funds are because they don’t have the experience to make their own calls on stocks. They are also occupied with other things beside just watching the stock market. Keeping your mutual funds can be a wise decision instead of prematurely “playing the market” in individual stocks.
It is important to remember that online brokerage firms add fees and charges that need to be looked at closely. Before buying and selling large scale stocks online, look at what the tax results are of such trading. The average online brokerage costs are lower than full-service brokers, but fees can still add up.
Remember that just because you are investing online, the Internet is not foolproof and you are bound to run into some problems. There will surely be times when you are unable to gain access to your account. You’re connection could be down, the brokerage firm’s server could crash if trading is overly heavy, you could experience a software glitch, or you may be away from your computer when there is a major market move. Always be prepared for these things and keep in mind the available alternative trading options such as phone trading.
When investing online it is your responsibility to say as informed as possible. Don’t just settle for what you hear. Instead do a little research on a company before investing in them. There are services that send you automatic e-mail messages over news about your stock; take advantage of these. Remember in online investing everything is up to you and knowledge is power.

Indonesia and 19 other nations have committed to produce investment in energy and renewable energy sector such as geothermal, wind and solar energy via Climate Investment Funds. The twenty countries were divided into two groups, in which the first fourteen countries planned to bring a remarkable change in the clean energy sector and reduce the emission of carbon from the power plants. The Clean Technology Fund welcomed the countries and declared that, the initial phase of the renewable energy project will require 2.4 billion USD and it will produce nearly 30900 megawatts of power. The other six countries will concentrate on the development of the eco-friendly energy.The company is installing an Amacan geothermal prospect located at a 47,491-hectare area in Compostela Valley, which has a potential of 40 MW.Taylored Building Solutions LLC, has allocated $100,000 to develop a distribution strategy for site-built residential housing.Taylored Building Solutionmakes modular homes and plans to hire 30 additional workers in 2011.
Aragorn Power and Energy Corporation mentioned that, the enhancement of the steam fields can roughly produce 100 megawatt, by installing an extra source of base load current to the Luzon grid. The cost of the 100 megawatt project will be around 300 million USD and it is considered as the unprecedented project under the 2008 Renewable Energy Act. Aragorn Power and Energy Corporation, large oil and gas producing company in Philippines recently has signed an understanding with Chevron Kalinga Limited, subordinate of Chevron Geothermal Philippines to construct a power plant in Kalinga. More than 300 million USD is rendered as energy investment to the 100 megawatt Kalinga geothermal power project. Guidance Management Corporation and the Aragorn Power and Energy Corporation acquired the geothermal service contract from the Energy Department and this project will cover 26000 hectares of land in the state of Kalinga. The Chevron Company carries the duty of digging, development and handling the activities of the power plant and the steam fields. Why do Private Equity firms, certain real estate investments, and hedge funds get better tax rates?
I would consider myself a conservative on fiscal issues, and this makes no sense to me. Hedge Fund Managers, Real Estate Oligarchs, and Private Equity managers get the capital gains tax rate when investing other people’s money? I wouldn’t even consider raising the highest tax rate, but I wouldn’t see a problem taxing these people like everyone else. It probably isn’t a good time to do it, but they never should have gotten this special treatment. I think they should raise the taxes on these guys, and lower taxes on everybody else.

I would support a 10% tax on income from 0-30k. 20% on income from 30k-100k. 30% on income from 100k-1,0000, and 40% on everything above 1,000,000.
I’ll have to answer my own question. The tax law was good for many real estate companies and others, and the Wall Street guys came in and screwed it up. They need to somehow prevent the Wall Street guys from using the tax break, and let the others use it. Probably not possible, so the problem will never be solved.
