The Solar Settlement in Freiburg –
The Solar Settlement generates 420,000 kWh of solar energy from a total photovoltaic output of about 445 kW peak per year. If one calculates the energy savings from the optimal efficiency, here annually 200,000 liters of oil and 500 tons of CO2 are saved. For the first time worldwide, even until today, PlusEnergy was implemented as a community in Freiburg – receiving heavy worldwide response and exciting awards.
For the undertaking, financing and marketing of this PlusEnergy pilot-project a building development company was founded. A portion of the marketing was completed through four ‚Freiburg Solar Funds,‘ corporate real estate funds and simultaneously an ethical-ecological financial investment.

Harvest Power To Receive Investment From Canada?S Clean Energy Fund
The Canadian Government’s Clean Energy Fund has announced that Harvest Power Canada, Ltd. has been selected to receive an investment in support of Harvest Power’s proposed anaerobic digestion and renewable energy project at its Fraser Richmond subsidiary outside of Vancouver, British Columbia.
Harvest’s Fraser Richmond plant is one of 19 projects across Canada to be identified by the Clean Energy Fund, part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan. In selecting Harvest’s proposal, the Clean Energy Fund recognized that Harvest’s technology “has the potential to be rapidly deployed across Canada as a mechanism to divert food wastes from landfills and produce renewable energy.”
“Investments in clean energy technologies are a key part of our approach to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving the environment,” said the Honourable Lisa Raitt, Canada’s Minister of Natural Resources. She said that she hopes projects like Harvest ‘s facility will help bring Canada to the forefront of clean energy technology, while also providing green jobs for Canadians.
The Clean Energy Fund will offer up to 6 million to support 19 projects across Canada that help create renewable and clean energy power sources across the country, including integrated community energy solutions, smart grid technology, and renewable applications with solar, wind, tidal and geothermal energy. Harvest is expected to received between .5 – million (CDN) following negotiations and signing of a formal contribution agreement with Natural Resources Canada.
“We’re tremendously excited by the possibilities that Canada’s Clean Energy Fund presents to our Fraser Richmond plan,”says Harvest Power CEO Paul Sellew. “Installing the anaerobic digestion plant at our facility will allow us to harvest the energy from the organic materials we recycle, providing clean, renewable, independent energy for British Columbia. This project will enable us to further Fraser Richmond’s leadership position in helping the Metro Vancouver Region meet its ambitious Zero Waste Challenge goal of diverting 70 percent of the region’s solid waste from landfills by 2015.
The Fraser Richmond Soil and Fibre facility is North America’s largest permitted food waste and yard waste compost facility. One of the most productive compost facilities in North America, Fraser Richmond will be the first project to utilize high solids anaerobic digestion on a commercial scale on the continent. Harvest plans to begin construction this summer on the first phase of the facility, which will process 30,000 tons of organic waste every year and produce nearly 6800 MWh/yr of electricity, enough electricity to power over 500 homes.
Harvest will provide more details about our Fraser Richmond facility in the coming months.
The Clean Energy Fund is investing nearly billion in technology development and demonstration throughout Canada. Total investments under the Clean Energy Fund for large and small demonstration projects are benefiting Canada’s economy by leveraging nearly .5 billion in further investments by industry and other levels of government.

An instrument of Canada’s Economic Action Plan, the Clean Energy Fund is intended to generate new green economic activity in the short term, while strengthening the foundation for sustainable prosperity in the future. Where is the Clean Tech Jackpot?

It seems every week, if not every day, a new company is heralded as the next revolution in clean technology. Like gold prospectors a hundred years ago, the race is on to find fortunes in the emerging clean energy sector, which everyone agrees must be the future. But what does that future look like? What’s a venture capitalist to do?
Dr. Danny Petrasek is trying to answer that question. Currently on the research and teaching faculty in Bioengineering and Applied and Computational Mathematics at Caltech and the clinical faculty at the UCLA School of Medicine, Petrasek is uniquely positioned at the intersection of biology, physics, and engineering to determine what the future might look like. And as a Venture Partner at Voltage Capital, he’s putting his money where his mouth is. “Betting on the solutions to our energy shortcomings is the goal of every green tech investor,” he says. “But in truth we have no idea where to solutions will come from. It’s a constant search that will see many failures before an explosive breakthrough.”
Petrasek’s search to hedge the bet is three fold. Given the unknowns, what are the most commercially viable products and services? Where are the hotbeds of research? And where have breakthroughs occurred but not been commercialized?
One of the largest sectors within clean tech and one of Petrasek’s specialties is solar energy. Photovoltaic technology is proven but ineffi cient and expensive, so strong contenders for investment are companies and technologies who are figuring out the storage problem (i.e. batteries) and making the supply side cheaper.
A key ingredient to solar cells are silicon wafers. Once the lone domain to computer companies for use in microchips, silicon is now a commodity in great demand for green tech. “Make the wafers cheaper,” Petrasek says, “and the solar energy product becomes cheaper. We are never going to get the kind of explosion as we got in computer chips, but what we will see is the silicon wafers and solar cells getting cheaper and cheaper. Right now the price of silicon is rising, so one prospect of investment lies within synthetic silicon production.”
More companies producing silicon means cheaper chips, which in turn means cheaper solar cells, but that doesn’t address the biggest obstacle, storage. Collecting the energy is one thing, but once solar energy is absorbed and processed into electricity, you need to store it somewhere. There is no control over when the sun shines and at present there is no perfect solution to storage – today’s batteries simply cannot keep up with the power or lifestyle demands of society. “Once we solve the storage problem,” Petrasek says, “then you will see an explosion in solar energy. Until that time, its still not a great resource.”
The solar energy industry is poised for a breakthrough, but as with so many new technologies, it is at the mercy of the market. When the economy was strong and new construction booming, solar gained market share, but all that ceased with the real estate crash. Prices are still too high for widespread implementation even with government subsidies, but if Congress adopts a carbon cap or begins selling emissions credits—both of which appear likely to happen in one form or another in the coming years—than solar will again be on the precipice of success. “Solar and storage is still an open field,” says Mouli Cohen, Founder of Voltage Capital, “but we don’t know what the future holds. As investors, we have to look at everything going on and try to decide where go. At Voltage, we’re still answering that question, but we need to begin moving soon.”

Why are there ad’s on Tv saying there is no such thing as clean coal?
My dad is a material scientist and he was telling me about a colleague who is trying to get funding on clean coal, were you get 75% of potential energy from the coal with no carbon emissions. And he was competing against another method that uses 100% of the energy but only release 25% of the energy.
So why would they have commercials saying that it is just some 1800′s technology with no benefits?
Obama campaigned on coal, but what viewpoint? First: Coal is energy from USA. Then: Coal can’t be made clean.?
Now: Coal stocks are soaring and production is ramping up.
Where next?
What is reality?
What about “Carbon emissions”?
What about Obama’s statement that he would make coal so expensive that coal producers wil go bankrupt?

* Corporate research, development and deployment (RD&D) into clean energy has continued to grow year on year, reaching a total of $10.5bn in 2007, up from $8.37bn in 2006. The figures show the EMEA (Europe Mid-East and Africa) region taking the largest share, with AMER (Americas) closely following and ASOC (Asia-Pacific) somewhat lagging behind.
* 57.6% of clean energy RD&D investment came from EMEA based companies, 33.8% from AMER and 8.6% from ASOC. Utility / energy companies and technology firms have the highest clean energy RD&D budgets in general, with the top 5 firms being GE, United Technologies, BP, E.ON and BASF in descending order.
* However, energy companies’ investment into clean energy RD&D still only accounts for around 2% of overall energy RD&D expenditure.
General Electric (GE) stands out among all the firms analysed (47 in total) with a RD&D budget for 2006 of $900m, which is 54% of global technology / industrial RD&D spending. Furthermore, GE has committed to increasing this budget under their ‘Ecomagination’ program to $1.5bn annually by 2010, which will be directed to the development of renewable energies, more efficient aircraft engines and less energy-intensive solutions to water purification and re-use.
Sector Breakdown and Analysis
Utility / Energy Sector
Spending by utilities on clean energy RD&D covered a wide variety of initiatives and developments: BP continued its research into solar, wind, hydrogen fuel cells, biofuels, combined cycle gas turbines (CCGT) and natural gas, mostly through BP Alternative Energy, which was created in 2005 with an investment of $8bn over the period 2005-2015. BP aims to build two of the world’s first industrial –scale hydrogen power plants by 2015. Shell’s RD&D was in much the same vein, though with extra focus on biofuels, which now puts Shell as the world’s leading distributor of biofuels. Endesa and Enel were pushing forward carbon capture and sequestration, while RWE maintained research into increasing the efficiency of its coal-fired plants, being well aware of its status as “Europe’s largest emitter of CO2” due to its large use of coal reserves. EDF’s main RD&D interests lay in PV, solar thermal and biomass, along with electric vehicles, of which EDF has the world’s largest fleet. As with the other French utilities (Total, Suez, and Gaz de France) a large portion of electricity production comes from nuclear power – in fact 95% of EDF’s electricity generation does not emit any greenhouse gases. The primary area of RD&D for Suez was waste and water management and since the company merged with Gaz de France, a target has been set for 10% of electricity generation to come from renewable sources by 2012 (current level: 3%). In the US, Exxon Mobil was directing the majority of its clean energy RD&D to cogeneration facilities, which reduce the company’s CO2 footprint by 10.5m tonnes/yr. Chevron was developing biofuels and hydrogen fuel cells for transport, and renewables for power generation, whereas Exelon’s spending sought further advances in clean coal technology, solar cells and wind power. Pacific Gas and Electric Company continued research into solar technology, maintaining its position as the leading solar utility in the US.
Technology Sector
As stated earlier, GE was the clear leader in clean energy RD&D in 2006. The $900m budget was spent across multiple divisions, including renewables (wind, solar and biomass), fuel efficiency of aircraft engines, efficiency of power generation and less energy-intensive solutions to water purification and re-use. Airbus also worked on the fuel efficiency of aircraft engines, along with advanced production technologies to minimise energy and water consumption during the manufacturing process. The remaining firms in this sector followed suit, with United Technologies making a significant contribution of $700m to the total figure.
Automobile Sector
The top two clean energy developers in this sector were Toyota ($240m) and Honda ($220m), with Daimler and Volkswagen also standing out ($200m and $110m respectively). As would be expected, a large share of RD&D is on biodiesel, bioethanol, hybrids and cleaner conventional engines in a bid to reduce vehicle emissions in the short term. However, there is growing research in other areas: aerodynamic and lightweight vehicles, recyclability (Volkswagen has set a goal of developing cars with 95% recyclability at the end of life-cycle), and increased efficiency in the manufacturing process (Nissan has put in place a target of reducing CO2 emissions by 2050, on 2000 levels). Last but not least, fuel cell technology is seen as a long-term solution; one that requires further development to be marketable, but one that will also replace conventional fuels and even biofuels in the long run.
Chemical Sector
This emerged as a sector where clean energy RD&D facts and figures were less available and less clearly presented. Out of the chemical businesses examined in the research for this note, BASF was not only the clearest reporter but also by far the highest spender, with a total of $600m directed to clean energy RD&D (this accounted for one third of BASF’s total RD&D budget in 2006). BASF was heavily involved in the development of new materials for organic solar cells, innovative storage media for hydrogen and advanced technologies for improved insulation such as nanopore foams. Bayer continued to research super-lightweight plastics for improved energy efficiency in vehicles along with energy efficient building design. The same trend was seen for STMicroelectronics and Dow Chemical, which has also committed to a reduction in energy intensity by 25% over the period 2005-2015. DuPont had a slightly different approach which included the development of new biofuels and the design of high performance materials such as textiles from renewable sources. AIR Liquide had a different set of research criteria still, with much work carried out on clean coal, biomass, hydrogen fuel cell and gasification technologies. As is seen across all sectors, all the chemical firms were also furthering research into efficiency on their manufacturing operations with an overall aim of reducing emissions in the long-term.
Construction Sector
The cement industry accounts for 5% of all man-made CO2 emissions around the world so it would be reasonable to expect this sector to be engaged in emission reductions and climate change mitigation research. This proved to be the case, with transparent reporting throughout. Lafarge ($120m clean energy RD&D budget) was involved in creating advanced cements and cement substitutes which are less energy intensive and developing carbon capture / storage techniques. Heidelberg Cement ($100m) looked for ways of increasing the effective use of alternative raw materials and fuels in the production of cement, while also setting a target of reducing specific emissions by 15% over the period 1990-2010. This sort of commitment was common amongst construction companies: Holcim set itself a goal of reducing specific emissions by 20% from 1990-2010 and Cemex made a pledge to reduce its specific emissions by 25% by 2015 on 1990 levels. In the steel industry, Arcelor Mittal is coordinating the Ultra-Low CO2 Steelmaking Programme between 48 industrial firms. The programme develops cutting edge technologies and aims to cut CO2 emissions in the long-term by 50%.
Retail Sector
There is limited activity within this sector on clean energy RD&D, with only Tesco providing clear data ($144m). The company is developing gasification technology to turn food waste into power and is also involved in wind, solar, biomass and combined heat and power research. Further to this, Tesco is also the UK market leader in biofuels and is intending to spend $720m on low-carbon technologies over the period 2006-2010.
