Is real estate really the the best investment?
For a $100,000 investment money and 8 to10 year time horizon, is it better to buy 2 houses in Houston (each at 20% down) or a S&P index fund is a better alternative?
The gain from the investmnet will be needed for children’s college education after 10 years.
After what happened in the stock market, it makes most people wonder if they can count on the money to grow even in a 8 to10 year period. I know that managing rental investment is no fun but one would make money (at least won’t lose principal) over 8-10 year time horizon.
I know there are tons of books that say real estate is the best investment. But is it really? specially for the middle class.
Are there any other investments (passive) ideas to get 8-10 % annual return over a 10 year period?

What is the best investment for 2010? Commodities, stocks, currency?
I am looking to invest $2000. I know it’s not a huge amount, but I wanted to know what people thought the best place for it would be. I really want to stay away from stocks because I worry about a double-dip recession & I feel like the stock market bounced back way too fast & won’t be able to maintain when all the baby boomers pull their money out.

New Zealand’s Hedge Fund Managers Weathered The Financial Crisis Best

Two years after launching the Opalesque Roundtable Series in 2008 in Auckland, Opalesque founder Matthias Knab traveled back to the “other end of the world” (another 11 hours flight from Hong Kong…) looking for answers and the latest trends. There, a diverse group of hedge fund managers and CTAs were able to buck the global downtrend and instead cranked out a positive return of +20.4% (as measured by the Ernst & Young New Zealand Absolute Return Index) in 2008 – the year the MSCI World tanked over -40%, erasing $14trn of shareholders’ wealth. In 2009, the NZARA Index, which was created in conjunction with the New Zealand Absolute Return Association (NZARA), was up +17.5%.

As the average global hedge fund was down around -20% in 2008, the question that needs to be answered is: what is behind that clear outperformance of the New Zealanders?
