Alternative Investments in Finance

Alternative investment involves investment in assets other than the traditional products of stocks, bonds or cash. These assets include the likes of art, antiques, wine, coins or rare stamps – in other words, rare items. Financial assets like commodities, private equity, hedge funds and financial derivatives are also accommodated in alternative investment. Due to the complexities in their nature and the regulations and the illiquidity involved, alternative investment assets are usually held by institutional investors or accredited individuals.

A thorough investment analysis is required before buying and investing in alternative financial resources. They also involve a high minimum investment and fee structures compared to mutual funds. Traditional investment involves risk. We have seen how in recent times the world of finance was hit as bankruptcy triggered panic across the globe. But even in troubled waters, you don’t need to be bearish if you are the proud owner of a few bottles of Bordeaux or a Penny Black or may be a series of Andy Warhol prints as you are supposed to get their money back virtually.

Why do people go for alternative financial investment?

A probable reason why people invest in alternative resources is to diversify and reduce the overall investment risk. Portfolio diversification is suggested to potential investors to minimize the risk. And this can be achieved through alternative investment.

Advantages to investing alternatively:

1. Alternative investment involves low correlation with traditional financial investments like stocks and bonds. As a result several large institutional funds like the pension and private endowments have already begun allocating a small proportion, less than 10%, of their portfolios to alternative investments like hedge funds.

2. It is comparatively less liquid in nature.

Disadvantages to investing alternatively:

1. Lack of published verifiable performance data and minimum opportunity to advertise to potential investors.

2. Determining the current market value of assets is often difficult.

3. Cost of purchase and sales is relatively high.

The most common types of alternative investment include:

• Hedge funds as alternative financial investments include a wide range of investment assets like stocks and commodities, which principally aim at offsetting the potential losses in the markets.

• Future funds as alternative investments are standardized contracts of sale and purchase of commodity at a predetermined price on a specific date. Futures are used to trade currencies and commodities like petroleum and agricultural products.

• Real estate can also serve as an alternative investment option, which typically involves buying and selling of immovable properties like land and premises. It yields rental income as well as capital appreciation.

• Though not always viewed as such, art is certainly an alternative investment. This investment option gained some new traction after the 2008 market downturn and recession period.

• Investment in vintage items, such as fine wine, has proved profitable with consistent high-yield returns, even in the months of 2008 credit crunch.

• The precious metal gold is used as a defensive alternative financial investment, which tends to grow in popularity during periods of prolonged economic upheavals.

In this readily evolving economic climate, as investors are striving to locate the best investment niche, these alternative financial investment options are gaining greater and greater appreciation due to their low-risk and high-yield nature.

Don’t get too excited. I am not suggesting that you become imprudent in your investing. I think you should take a small percentage of your retirement investing capital and look at alternative ways to invest.

Consider taking five to ten percent of your investing capital and try something different.

Why do something different?
If you are over fifty years of age, you have been advised to adjust your portfolio and your savings rate because retirement is not too many years in the future. Some of the investments you made when you were younger just would be too risky now.

Calculate your retirement income needs
Unfortunately, the vast majority of people in this age range, and older, don’t have enough capital accumulated to finance their cash needs during retirement. Here is a retirement calculator. Don’t take my word for it.

Re-balance your investment portfolio
Current advice is to re-balance your portfolio away from stocks and more in the direction of the less risky bonds as you start nearing retirement. Bonds will also provide you with current income in retirement.

However, eliminating stocks is unwise because of inflation. Inflation reduces the dollar over time, as I am sure you know. Currently, we are experiencing tremendous inflation in the commodities markets. The main stream media doesn’t talk about inflation, but if you watch the market, you know. Your investments must grow at least as fast as inflation just to remain even. Bonds will not give you the appreciation that you need to beat inflation.

So, what is the average investor to do?
Take a portion of you investment portfolio and invest it using a market timer. How much of your portfolio? Ask your financial adviser to help you make this determination. A good market timing system will reduce your emotional misreads of the market. Take a look at the timer’s actual performance reports and trade with one that has a good performance record.

Brazil has been growing and converting sugarcane for over 20 years now. The energy produced from the sugarcane is 7 times greater than that of corn.

Maybe it’s our climate? Brazil and Hawaii are both humid but so is a lot of states. Thoughts?

Art as an investment option provides investors with an opportunity to reduce risk – a key advantage to any alternative-heavy portfolio. As with most alternative investments, art has the good fortune of not correlating with the ebb and flow of the regular stock market. This implies that, if the stock market has fallen down by 5% on any particular day,an art collector can be rest assured that his or her “investments” will not be affected that much.

Investment in art also helps in diversifying one’s portfolio and reducing overall risk. Notably though, art as an alternative investment option itself has evolved considerably in the last decade or so. If you study the alternative investment sector closely, then you will quickly realize how building up a portfolio of random pieces that appeal to your individual tastes is not the best way to invest. Today, dedicated art funds have been set up, which are large organizations that employinvestment advisors who are specifically trained in providing help to investors with a little knowledge of the art market at large to gain access. The trick is that art is not only a hedge against inflation, but is a part of the widening plate of alternative investments which help in diversifying portfolios.

Here is an interesting fact: From 1875 to 2000, art as an alternative investment outperformed fixed income (though not equities). But the past two years have been a different story: with all the losses incurred because of the Financial Crisis, art as an alternative investment has triumphed over equities as well.

For skittish investors this news may come as a relief, but they must also then stomach the fact that art can be very expensive. The high price of a prized creative expression certainly makes it hard to say that investing in art is an option for everyone.An investor can profit considerably by investing in art,but it definitely comes with some sizable upfront costs. Additionally, there are difficulties involved in making the correct appraisal. One may argue that this problem is an issue with any financial asset, but in the case of art the problem is more pressing because qualities like uniqueness, the strong personal need and the emotional status of the buyer – as well as the seller – can influence an appraisal. And of course, art is not “generative” in the sense of investing in a farm or cottage industry, sincea piece by itself has no means of attracting periodic cash flows.

All that being said, buying-and-holding is a good strategy for art as an investment – in fact, it is the only one that works. The costs involved in acquiring art pieces can be offset if oneactively manageshis or her portfolio. With the right amount of ambition, temporary cash flows can be achieved from owning art: consider bringing the art pieces to an exhibition. As a result, the value of a piece increases not only because since more aficionados will have seen and praised it, but also because the exhibition history of a piece is often considered in appraisals.
