The timber fence is an Australian icon. These fences are the traditional Aussie fences, tough as nails, and they can look very elegant, a picture-perfect feature around any home. They can last forever with some very basic care, and they’re extremely adaptable, easy to use in any setting and on any job, from reliable garden fences to privacy and landscaping work.

Timber fences- The designer’s dream

Timber fences are almost a reflex choice for Australians. They’re extremely dependable. A good timber fence can last for generations without needing much if any work done on it. They’re kid and garden-friendly, keeping the pets and the footballs inside and the world outside. They’re great in summer, good heat reflectors, efficient windbreaks, and they’re now considered best choice as noise blockers.

The modern timber fences and gates have carried on the traditions well. The Aussie backyard loves its privacy and comfort, and the new fences are designed to provide just that. They’re big, beautiful, and they go with everything. The “timber look” is another famous Australian home tradition, and the treated pine plantation timber is perfect for that look.

Solid timber, long life

Treated timber is practically indestructible. That’s another reason for the popularity of these fences. They’re termite-proof, and last forever. In any Australian city you can see old timber fencing which really looks like it’s always been there. It probably has. Timber fencing has earned its reputation as a good long term investment.

Timber fencing can handle exposure, sloping sites, and just about any environmental issue. It’s perfect for boundary areas where you need solid fencing. These fences come in a wide range of styles and designs, including privacy screens, which are becoming a major fashion and architectural statement as well as practical fencing options.

Maintenance and care of timber fences is easy

The most you’ll need to do with your timber fence is keep an eye out for any signs of wear. If anything does need doing, it’s easy. Replacement pieces are easy to get, made to measure. Most timber fences can be completely maintained without a lot of effort or cost.
The only requirement for major maintenance is likely to occur with old fences which haven’t had the basic care they need. Supports may become loose, and the fence is unbalanced, which means it will need professional help. Fortunately for homeowners, in most cases that just involves resetting the fence and replacing parts as required.

Supports keep your fence in good condition

The main structural elements of timber fencing are the supports. These are firmly laid at the time of setting up the fence, and usually don’t have any problems unless damaged or very late in their lives. Keep an eye on the supports, and you’ll see any possible problems before they happen.

It’s a good idea to get some professional help from fencing contractors if you’re looking at cracks in supports or if the base is shifting for some reason. These can be major issues, but they’re not insoluble, and easy to fix if you get to work on them quickly.

Whether you want the iconic paling fence, the new modern screen fences or a picket fence, you can’t go wrong with timber.

Watch Your Water Table

First of all, what the heck is a water table? No, it’s not a table made outta water. I mean, we have water beds, but it just doesn’t make any sense to have a water table like that. Well, a water table is basically the top surface of the groundwater in any given area of land. It’s usually invisible due to it being under the ground, but during events such as flooding, the water table rises above ground.

Many of us believe that the harder we work the more money we’ll earn. However, this is not true. Much of the time the exact opposite is the case.

Let me give you an example. It’s a fact that it’s the poorest people in this world who work the hardest. Try working in a factory for 7 days a week at just a few cents an hour and you’ll soon realise this.

Take a look at any rich person you know or know of. How hard do they really work? Probably not very hard and if they do work hard it’s often because they enjoy it. The fundamental difference between the rich and the poor is that the poor work hard for very little money but the rich have money work for them.

The rich have assets which earn them more money while the poor have liabilities which cost them money. To be a successful entrepreneur you must learn to obtain assets and build systems which will earn money for you, not buy liabilities which will cost you money in the long term.

An example I often use is the following: two men buy an expensive car from the same garage at the same price. The first man drives it around for a few years and after paying out thousands of dollars in fuel, insurance and tax he finally sells it on (as he can no longer afford to run it) at a loss of another 20 thousand dollars. I personally know people who do this continuously.

The second man hires out the car to people for special occasions such as weddings and parties. After having his customers pay for the fuel, insurance and tax for a few years he pockets the profits he’s made and trades in the car for a bigger one. Any expenses he incurs are tax deductible. He then repeats the process with his bigger, smarter car and in a few years time is able to buy two cars, then three.

Ten years down the line the first man has made a substantial loss and is back riding his push bike to work. The second man now has a fleet of posh cars which he hires out for a living and has quit his day job as a result.

So, if these two men both started off buying the same car at the same price, what went wrong for the first man and what went right for the second man? It’s simple, the first man turned his car into a liability as many of us do. The second man immediately turned it into an asset.

Next time you buy anything of value just remember this example and establish whether you’re really buying an asset or a liability. Try to be the second man wherever possible and you’ll be one large step ahead of your friends and associates who haven’t been fortunate enough to read this article.

Truth About Exciting Commodity Trading

Commodity trading is a battle between return and risk. Because of the leverage involved, you can achieve a higher rate of return than from most other forms of investment, but at a higher risk. Commodity trading is speculative, involves a high degree of risk, and is designed only for sophisticated investors who are able to bear the loss of more than their entire investment.

You should keep in mind that past performance is not necessarily indicative of future performance. Commodity trading is just one step in solving the complex agriculture problems. Interestingly the concept of futures trading started from farming when a French wine merchant started locking prices for his wine produce even before his grapes were ready.

Commodity trading is speculating on the future price movements of the basic raw materials on which global trade is based. The two most traded commodities are oil and coffee; however, all the other basic materials are also included in this market. Commodity trading is reaching an all-time high in popularity. Although many individuals are able to make a profit with futures trading, there are also those who end up losing money. Commodity trading is a big arena, just like the stock market.

Commodity trading is a risky venture and in order to produce profits takes some real education and a sound trading system. Most commodity traders seem to fight the markets in an attempt to gain profits quickly only to find the market to continue sideways or travel in the opposite direction.

Commodity trading is based on leverage, and the power of leverage is what makes people rich. Commodity trading is the one area of the financial markets where any person with tenacity, risk capital, and discipline can be highly successful. BUT there is also considerable risk of loss, particularly for the uneducated or misinformed.

Commodity trading is simply buying commodities (such as gold, or silver or platinum) as a tangible asset. When inflationary pressures are strong (and interest rates are low), these can give a better return on investments. Commodity trading is not inherently risky. It is only as risky as you want to make it according to the amount of leverage that you use. Commodity trading is a zero sum or cash business. Your trading account is settled at the end of each trading day with your trading account balance changing daily.

Obviously, unlike having money in a CD, this type of investment can lose as much or more than is gained. Another advantage of using commodities is that the commissions are much lower than with other investing, such as in mutual funds. Obviously, if you run out of money you will be forced out of the market and will lose the lion’s share of your capital allocated for that trade. In an extreme situation, such as if wheat was linked to cancer in humans, then obviously if we were long wheat we would most likely get out and take the loss.

Futures trading is economically beneficial because it facilitates better production planning in the agriculture and agro-based industries. In these sectors it is also utilised as a hedging device against violent movement in the price of commodities over a period of time which, in the case of agricultural produce, stretches over crop seasons, often from sowing to harvesting time. Futures trading grew by leaps and bounds making the most of the bull-run witnessed globally. Fueled by the rally in equity markets, stock market players jumped into commodity markets to leverage on the all round boom.

Future trading includes widely traded commodities like coffee, oil, gold, sugar or financial instruments like stock market indices, bonds, or currencies. Futures and options markets are risk management tools, helping to offset the exposure of contracting to supply a given amount of commodity ahead of harvest time. The commodity exchanges in practice seem to be less a way to spread risk, and more a way to concentrate profits for those who know the most about a market.

Futures contracts allow speculators the right to buy or sell a specified quantity of a commodity at a contracted price before an expiration date. Less than 3% of all futures contracts result in physical delivery of any commodity, the majority of all contracts are liquidated before expiration.

Do not try to trade commodities without a good foundation of commodity market knowledge. In getting started it is best to focus on just one or two commodities. That will be enough to keep you good and busy for a long while.
